Background & Objective

The challenge or opportunity you are trying to address for the organization.

Iconically seeks to define its product-market fit by identifying the ideal customer profile and validating its unique value proposition.

Learning Objectives

This is what students will learn as they complete the case.

Achieving product-market fit is one of the most critical milestones for early-stage startups. In this case, students step into the role of market analysts and growth strategists to help Iconically refine its positioning in the creator economy. Without direct customer interaction, students must rely on secondary research, competitor analysis, and strategic thinking to identify the ideal customer and validate the company’s value proposition.
Students completing this case will be able to:
  • Understand the concept of product-market fit and its importance in startup success, particularly within platform-based and creator economy businesses.
  • Conduct secondary market research using industry reports, competitor platforms, and publicly available data to extract meaningful insights.
  • Analyze trends in the creator economy, including behaviors of influencers, brands, and mission-driven platforms.
  • Identify common pain points and unmet needs of both creators and brands through indirect data sources such as reviews, forums, and case studies.
  • Evaluate competitor offerings to understand positioning, differentiation strategies, and gaps in the market.
  • Develop a detailed Ideal Customer Profile (ICP), including demographics, psychographics, goals, and pain points for both sides of a marketplace (creators and brands).
  • Assess and validate a company’s value proposition by comparing it against market expectations and competitor benchmarks.
  • Identify gaps or weaknesses in the current value proposition and propose data-driven improvements.
  • Synthesize research findings into actionable strategic insights that align product features with market demand.
  • Formulate recommendations to refine product offerings, enhance user experience, and improve go-to-market strategies.
  • Recognize risks and opportunities associated with entering or scaling within a competitive digital marketplace.
  • Communicate complex research findings clearly through structured reports, demonstrating the ability to translate analysis into business strategy.
  • Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills in situations with limited direct data access, simulating real-world constraints in early-stage ventures.
  • Integrate market research, customer insights, and strategic planning into a cohesive framework for improving product-market alignment.
