Project Synopsis: Challenge/Opportunity

As organizations expand their use of sensitive data for AI, analytics, modeling, and collaboration, they face a growing challenge: understanding how to protect and govern that data throughout the workflow, not simply determining whether a use case is compliant.

Karlsgate provides technology that can automate many of these protections, including de-identification, re-identification risk remediation, protected data matching and integration, data minimization, and governance policy execution. However, these capabilities address problems that can be difficult for prospective users to recognize or translate into their own data workflows.

The opportunity is to create an accessible, interactive tool that helps organizations describe a proposed data use case, identify the associated privacy and governance risks, and understand what protections and workflow design would be appropriate. The recommendations would be grounded in Karlsgate’s capabilities and architectural principles, allowing users to see how complex governance requirements can be operationalized rather than managed through disconnected policies and manual processes.

For Karlsgate, this creates a new way to educate the market and demonstrate the practical application of its technology. For students, it provides the opportunity to work directly with Karlsgate to understand real-world privacy-enhancing technology and translate those capabilities into a functional tool combining data governance, cybersecurity, AI, user experience, and software development.

Project Synopsis: Activities/Actions Required
  1.  Conduct a discovery phase to understand Karlsgate’s technology, supported workflows, data protection capabilities, and approach to data governance.
  2. Identify representative data governance and privacy challenges that the tool should be able to assess.
  3. Develop a framework that maps those challenges to appropriate protections, workflow recommendations, and relevant Karlsgate capabilities.
  4. Define the questions and inputs needed to evaluate a proposed data use case, including data sensitivity, participants, data movement, intended use, output requirements, and potential re-identification risk.
  5. Develop the decision logic and recommendation engine that will translate user inputs into governance and workflow recommendations.
  6. Design the user experience and interface for the Data Governance Readiness Analyzer, with an emphasis on making complex concepts easy for users to understand.
  7. Build a functional prototype using appropriate development tools and frameworks.
  8. Test the prototype against representative use cases and refine the logic based on the results.
  9. Work with Karlsgate subject-matter experts throughout the project to validate technical assumptions, recommendations, and alignment with Karlsgate’s capabilities.
  10. Develop a useful summary output that communicates identified risks, recommended protections, proposed workflow, and applicable Karlsgate capabilities.
  11. Prepare technical documentation and recommendations for how the prototype could be extended into a production-ready public tool.
  12. Present project progress, prototype demonstrations, findings, and final recommendations to Karlsgate stakeholders.
Project Synopsis: Expected Results
Success would be the development of a functional prototype that Karlsgate could realistically continue refining into a public-facing tool.

Key measures of success would include:

  • A working Data Governance Readiness Analyzer that guides users through a proposed data use case and produces meaningful, actionable recommendations.
  • A clear capability-to-recommendation framework that accurately maps common privacy and governance challenges to Karlsgate’s supported capabilities and workflows.
  • Decision logic that produces consistent, relevant recommendations across a range of representative use cases.
  • Recommendations that are technically accurate and validated by Karlsgate subject-matter experts.
  • A user experience that makes complex data governance and privacy concepts understandable to business, data, privacy, security, and technology professionals.
  • Successful testing across multiple use cases involving AI, analytics, data collaboration, data integration, and sensitive data.
  • A useful summary output that clearly communicates identified risks, recommended protections, proposed workflow, and relevant Karlsgate capabilities.
  • Technical documentation and recommendations that allow Karlsgate to continue developing the prototype after the capstone concludes.
  • A particularly strong outcome would be a prototype that provides enough standalone value for organizations to use as an educational and assessment resource while creating greater understanding of where Karlsgate can help operationalize the recommended protections and workflows.
