Human-I-T excels in its mission to bridge the digital divide by providing technology access to underserved communities. However, as the organization seeks to scale its impact, it faces a significant challenge: the current financial planning and forecasting systems are inadequate to support robust decision-making across its 12 departments. These systems lack cohesion and efficiency, leading to uncertainty in financial projections and misalignment in resource allocation. The consequences of this challenge are multifaceted: inaccurate forecasts can lead to budgetary constraints, hinder strategic growth initiatives, and ultimately impede the organization's ability to fulfill its mission effectively.
Project Synopsis: Activities/Actions Required
  1. Students will engage in a series of key activities throughout the project, utilizing a blend of research methods, analysis techniques, and practical deliverable creation.
  2. Initially, students will conduct a comprehensive assessment of existing financial planning systems through interviews with department leaders and the finance lead.
  3. They will analyze historical financial data to identify trends and key performance indicators (KPIs) that influence forecasting accuracy.
  4. Additionally, students will refine data inputs by gathering relevant quantitative and qualitative information from various departments.
  5. The final phase will involve the creation of a GL-based monthly forecasting model, integrating the findings from their analysis.
  6. Throughout the project, students will utilize tools like financial modeling software, google sheets/excel, AI functionality in co-pilot and/or gemini and data visualization techniques to present their insights and recommendations effectively.
Project Synopsis: Expected Results
  • The expected outcomes of this project include improved financial forecasting accuracy, enhanced decision-making capabilities, and a robust financial strategy for Human-I-T.
  • Students will learn how to conduct effective financial analyses, develop forecasting models, and understand the intricacies of nonprofit financial management. Business value will be realized through more informed resource allocation, the ability to strategically plan for future growth, and ultimately, a stronger alignment of financial resources with the organization's mission. 
  • SMART goals for this project include achieving a 20% improvement in forecast accuracy, delivering a comprehensive forecasting framework by the project’s conclusion, and engaging with at least three key stakeholders from each department during the assessment phase.
