Project Title Financial Software Review
Project Synopsis

What is the challenge or opportunity you are trying to address within your organization?

Rook Connect has developed a comprehensive business management platform that combines Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and Business Intelligence (BI) capabilities into a single solution designed for small and growing businesses. As the platform approaches broader deployment, the company is seeking an independent team of students to evaluate, validate, and strengthen its financial reporting functionality before wider customer adoption.

Financial reporting is one of the most critical components of any business management platform. Business owners rely on accurate ledgers, journal entries, financial statements, and reporting dashboards to make operational and strategic decisions. Even small inconsistencies in financial calculations, reporting logic, or workflow design can significantly impact customer trust and software usability.

Students will work closely with the Rook Connect leadership team to understand the intended accounting workflows, evaluate how financial transactions flow throughout the platform, and test whether reporting outputs accurately reflect underlying accounting activity. Throughout the engagement, students will gain exposure to integrated financial systems while providing valuable quality assurance and usability feedback that helps strengthen the product prior to future customer implementation.

What are some of the activities or action items you think will need to be taken to achieve your desired results?

Students will collaborate with Rook Connect throughout the semester to evaluate the financial reporting capabilities of the platform from both an accounting and user experience perspective.

Key activities include:

  •  Develop an understanding of the Rook Connect platform architecture, including how CRM, ERP, and Business Intelligence modules interact.
  •  Review the intended accounting workflows supporting general ledger activity, journal entries, accounts, and financial reporting.
  •  Execute structured software testing across financial reporting modules using sample business scenarios.
  •  Validate the accuracy of ledger postings, journal entries, account balances, and resulting financial statements.
  •  Identify calculation errors, workflow inconsistencies, reporting gaps, usability issues, or opportunities for product improvement.
  •  Evaluate the usability and effectiveness of financial dashboards and management reports from the perspective of small business users.
  •  Document testing procedures, findings, and recommendations using professional quality assurance methodologies.
  •  Prioritize software enhancements based on business impact, implementation complexity, and customer value.
  •  Present findings and strategic recommendations to Rook Connect leadership.

What would make this project a success for your organization? What measurable results are you looking to accomplish?

At the conclusion of the project, Rook Connect will receive an independent assessment of the functionality, accuracy, and usability of its financial reporting platform.

Successful outcomes include:

  •  Validation of key financial reporting workflows and accounting functionality.
  •  Identification of software defects, reporting inconsistencies, and usability improvements.
  •  Recommendations to improve financial statement generation, reporting accuracy, and overall user experience.
  •  Prioritized product enhancement recommendations based on customer value and implementation effort.
  •  Documentation of testing procedures and quality assurance findings that can support future product development.
  •  Increased confidence in the platform's readiness for customer implementation and continued product growth.
