About Students

Full time students (advanced undergraduate or graduate students) who are interested to study the toxic drug crisis through the lens of Unhoused People Who Use Drugs. 

Student Level:   Bachelor Degree Graduate Degree Ph.D Degree

Program Goals
  1. Understand the complexities of the toxic drug crisis and its disproportionate impact on unhoused people who use drugs (PWUD).
    • Analyze the historical, social, economic, and political factors contributing to the toxic drug crisis.
    • Examine the unique challenges faced by unhoused PWUD, including lack of access to safe housing, healthcare, and support services.
  2. Develop a comprehensive understanding of harm reduction principles and practices.
    • Explore the philosophy and core principles of harm reduction approaches in addressing substance use.
    • Learn about evidence-based harm reduction interventions, such as safe consumption sites, needle exchange programs, and naloxone distribution.
    • Analyze the effectiveness and limitations of current harm reduction strategies in the context of the toxic drug crisis.
  3. Critically analyze the current policies and systems that perpetuate the marginalization of unhoused PWUD.
    • Examine the criminalization of drug use and its impact on unhoused PWUD.
    • Investigate the role of stigma, discrimination, and structural inequalities in shaping the experiences of unhoused PWUD.
    • Assess the gaps and barriers in current policies and services that hinder access to support and care for unhoused PWUD.
  4. Engage with the lived experiences and perspectives of unhoused PWUD.
    • Develop skills in conducting ethical and trauma-informed research with vulnerable populations.
    • Learn to center the voices and narratives of unhoused PWUD in understanding the toxic drug crisis.
    • Collaborate with community organizations and advocates to gain insights into the realities faced by unhoused PWUD.
