About Volta Music Foundation
Volta educates students from underserved communities and minority backgrounds that have been historically excluded from educational opportunities that a broad cross-section of the population can access. Through virtual and in-person classes catered to all learning abilities taught by teachers trained in social-emotional learning and creative youth development methods, students can equitably access high-caliber music experiences and education. Volta Music Foundation provides access to sustained and intensive music education to elementary students in South Florida schools that are designated Title, with over 70% of students qualifying for federal free and reduced-price lunch programs. A significant majority (90%) of Volta's students and their families are people of color and members of minority groups that have been historically excluded from or not actively engaged by established arts programs available in the country. These communities often lack consistent and meaningful performing arts interactions, which is why Volta opens its doors to students of all abilities, backgrounds, and upbringings. Some students joining Volta's After-School classes are at-risk youth (5%) or living with disabilities (2%, Hard of Hearing). The schools that Volta serves need more funding for arts programs, thus needing more resources to bring quality and specialized instruction to students. Volta is a support system with donated instruments, materials, and the music educators that these schools desperately need.
Volta Music Foundation was established in 2018 by Yalyen Savignon with the vision of building a worldwide support network that empowers underserved youth in their musical development. Since then, Volta Music Foundation has grown exponentially to serve hundreds of students across Southeast Florida. Volta’s success is due in large part to its unique model of instruction. We aim to eliminate systemic barriers in music education by engaging young people from underserved communities through out-of-school music education, including instrument-specific classes, music theory, and history courses, master classes with professional artists, community-building sessions, creative performances, and donations of instruments and classroom materials, at no cost to students and their families. Our flagship program, the After-School Program, allows students from Title 1 schools to meet with music teachers weekly. The program recently earned Volta the award of Best Nonprofit of the Year in the Arts Category in Broward County.
Also crucial to Volta’s work are our partnerships with Title 1 schools, community centers, and other organizations serving marginalized youth, such as Boys & Girls Clubs. These partnerships provide a safe space for students to learn without placing undue burden on their families to transport them to another location. Volta has expanded its work to Latin America. The After-School Program has been implemented in several Latin American countries. Volta has developed an exchange program that allows students from Latin America to study in the United States and artists from Latin America to perform for and interact with students in the U.S.
Volta works on the principle of Nurturing Lives through music in every aspect of the educational and performance field. Volta means a turn in time, a repetition, and it values the circle of giving and the repetitive track of giving back to the community through education and performance, and engagement that will be instilled in the students that once benefited through our programs.
