Background & Objective

The challenge or opportunity you are trying to address for the organization.

The D.K. Kim Foundation, now celebrating two decades of philanthropic commitment, is at a pivotal juncture in its journey. Historically, the foundation has played a vital role as a funding entity, channeling resources to various organizations. However, as it marks its 20th year, the foundation acknowledges the need for a profound transformation. The central challenge and opportunity lie in redefining its role from that of a traditional funding organization to an active operational foundation.

Learning Objectives

This is what students will learn as they complete the case.

As philanthropic organizations evolve from grant-making entities to active operators, they must develop new capabilities in partnership design, strategic communication, and impact execution. In this case, students take on the role of strategy and operations consultants to support the D.K. Kim Foundation’s transition into a more hands-on, operational model. By combining partnership strategy, marketing, and impact measurement, students will design systems and tools that enable the foundation to expand its influence and drive meaningful, measurable outcomes.
Students completing this case will be able to:
  • Analyze the strategic implications of transitioning from a funding-based model to an operational foundation with direct program involvement.
  • Evaluate the foundation’s current marketing and communication efforts to identify gaps in positioning, engagement, and alignment with its evolving mission.
  • Assess potential partner organizations across domestic and international contexts based on mission alignment, capabilities, and potential for collaborative impact.
  • Design a partnership selection framework that defines criteria, evaluation methods, and strategic fit for identifying high-impact collaborators.
  • Develop a compelling media kit and narrative strategy that communicates the foundation’s mission, transformation, and impact to partners, donors, and stakeholders.
  • Prioritize partnership opportunities and collaboration models that maximize impact while aligning with available resources and operational goals.
  • Design structured collaboration frameworks that define roles, governance, resource allocation, and communication processes for effective partnerships.
  • Model a KPI and evaluation system that measures the effectiveness of partnerships, programs, and marketing efforts over time.
  • Synthesize marketing strategy, partnership development, and operational planning into a cohesive roadmap that enables the foundation to scale its impact as an active, execution-focused organization.
