Background & Objective

The challenge or opportunity you are trying to address for the organization.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is looking to nationally scale the Associate Board of Ambassadors (ABOA) strategy they've developed in Chicago. The ABOA in Chicago is the largest and most successful board of young up-and-coming leaders that are committed to serving ACS through fundraising and events. The Chicago ABOA currently includes 150 young professionals who raise $500,000 successfully each year.

Learning Objectives

This is what students will learn as they complete the case.

This case focuses on scaling a successful nonprofit leadership and fundraising model into new markets. Students will develop skills in growth strategy, market selection, and community engagement while designing a scalable playbook that aligns mission-driven impact with measurable outcomes.

  •  Analyze an existing program model (Chicago ABOA) to identify key success factors and areas for improvement
  •  Evaluate market expansion opportunities using criteria such as demographics, fundraising potential, and community engagement
  •  Develop a data-driven framework to prioritize and select target cities for program expansion
  •  Design a scalable launch playbook, including recruitment strategies, onboarding processes, and operational structures
  •  Create strategies to attract, engage, and retain young professional leaders aligned with organizational mission and values
  •  Incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles into program design and recruitment efforts
  •  Define short-, mid-, and long-term goals for program performance, including fundraising and community impact
  •  Forecast program growth and impact, and identify key resources and KPIs needed to support national expansion
