Background & Objective

The challenge or opportunity you are trying to address for the organization.

Online discussion forums remain a core component of many digital and hybrid learning environments, yet they are frequently perceived as low-impact, repetitive, or disconnected from authentic learning goals. Instructional designers and faculty developers are increasingly tasked with improving the quality of online discussions—without eliminating them—by redesigning prompts, aligning them to course outcomes, and fostering meaningful peer interaction.

Learning Objectives

This is what students will learn as they complete the case.

This case challenges students to design, facilitate, and evaluate a live professional development experience in a real-world instructional design context. It emphasizes the application of research, stakeholder alignment, and interactive facilitation in fully online environments. Students will develop skills in translating theory into practice, engaging professional audiences, and iterating based on feedback and real-time constraints. The work reflects authentic instructional design practice, where success depends on both design quality and effective delivery.
  •  Analyze organizational needs and stakeholder expectations to define clear, outcome-driven workshop objectives
  •  Evaluate common challenges in online discussion design and their impact on learner engagement and instructional quality
  •  Synthesize research-based best practices with lived user experience to inform practical instructional solutions
  •  Design an interactive online workshop that balances content delivery, participant engagement, and time constraints
  •  Develop facilitation strategies and activity structures (e.g., chat prompts, breakout sessions) to drive meaningful participation
  •  Assess trade-offs between interactivity, depth, and logistical constraints in live virtual learning environments
  •  Facilitate a live workshop and adapt in real time to participant dynamics, technical challenges, and feedback
  •  Interpret participant feedback and self-evaluation insights to refine workshop design and improve future instructional delivery
